POLA TEACH Initiative Invitation
The Port of Los Angeles has invited us to participate in their inaugural POLA TEACH (Port of Los Angeles Teaching Energy Advancement in Cargo Handling) initiative. This groundbreaking program represents exactly the type of strategic partnership we are elevating across our system to drive meaningful conversations and collaborative program development with major employers.
Economic Impact & Significance
The Port of Los Angeles stands as one of our nation’s most critical economic engines, supporting 1.4 million jobs nationwide—approximately 1 in every 113 U.S. jobs. When considered as part of the larger San Pedro Bay port complex (including the Port of Long Beach), this number grows to 2.7 million jobs nationwide, or about 1 in every 59 U.S. jobs.
The economic impact of these ports extends far beyond Southern California, creating ripple effects that affect supply chains, manufacturing, logistics, and transportation sectors across the entire nation. This massive economic footprint underscores why partnerships like POLA TEACH are essential for ensuring our students and communities benefit from the workforce opportunities these industries create.
The Opportunity
The Port recently received $411 million from the U.S. EPA to transition diesel cargo handling equipment and trucks to battery electric equipment. POLA TEACH brings together colleges, school districts, training providers, equipment manufacturers, and the Port to:
- Learn about cutting-edge technology before it becomes widespread throughout ports and transportation networks
- Develop relevant curriculum for zero-emission cargo handling equipment and trucks
- Create pathways for student training and employment in this growing sector
- Build lasting partnerships with industry leaders
