LA-26 Temple City USD: From Classroom to Curtain Call: Theater Production Pathway Expansion

Pathways Improvement Scope

The project will create a new Arts, Media, and Entertainment Theater Production pathway at Temple City Unified in partnership with Pasadena City College. The scope includes developing a UC “a-g” aligned, year-long course that combines classroom instruction, technical training, live productions, professional portfolio development, dual enrollment, and work-based learning. K12 SWP funding will support curriculum development, teacher professional development, dual enrollment coordination, industry-standard lighting, sound, rigging, and costume equipment, materials for sets and props, student transportation and supplies, mentor stipends, and program data tracking. Expected outcomes include serving at least 40 students during the first year, achieving an 80% course completion rate, having 50% of students develop professional portfolios, supporting 60 students in completing PCC dual enrollment coursework by Year 2, and increasing participation among English learners and socioeconomically disadvantaged students by 20% within two years. The long-term goal is to prepare pathway completers to continue into PCC theater programs or secure related entry-level employment.

Goals & Priorities

Temple City Unified’s primary goal is to establish a new and equitable Theater Production CTE pathway that connects students to Pasadena City College programs and living-wage careers in Los Angeles County’s creative economy. Priorities include launching a Theater Production course and developing it into a year-long CTE sequence, aligning curriculum with PCC’s Theater Production and Entertainment Industry Technology programs, offering dual enrollment opportunities, and preparing students in lighting, sound, set design, costumes, stage management, and other technical theater areas. The project will also expand work-based learning through industry workshops, backstage experiences, mentorship, live productions, and potential internships. Additional priorities include increasing participation among English learners, foster youth, low-income students, and other underrepresented groups through bilingual outreach, tutoring, counseling, and mentoring, while developing partnerships with theater and entertainment professionals to support students’ transition into PCC programs or related employment.
