Pathways Improvement Scope

Palisades Charter High School is experiencing an increase in Information & Communication Technologies (ICT) enrollment, but has been unable to meet the needs of our students due to a lack of an appropriate learning space. Establishing a new computer science lab at Palisades Charter High School is crucial for preparing more students for this in-demand industry and increasing diversity in STEAM field.

By creating a dedicated space with modern equipment and resources, the school can attract and support underrepresented students in computer science. A well-equipped lab provides hands-on experience, fosters collaboration, and helps students develop the skills needed for STEAM careers. Research shows that early exposure to computer science significantly increases the likelihood of students pursuing it in college and beyond. Moreover, a new lab can host targeted programs and mentorship opportunities specifically designed to engage women and students of color, addressing the pipeline issue in STEAM fields. By investing in such infrastructure, Palisades Charter High School can play a vital role in bridging the diversity gap in technology and preparing a more inclusive workforce for the future.

Goals & Priorities

The project aims to increase student enrollment among underrepresented subgroups and boost the number of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) pathway completers. Palisades Charter High School will implement a comprehensive strategy focused on curriculum enhancement, targeted outreach, and expanded early college credit options. The ICT curriculum will be updated to include culturally responsive content and real-world applications that resonate with diverse student interests and career aspirations, ensuring inclusivity and relevance. To increase access and awareness, the school will conduct targeted outreach campaigns and workshops in collaboration with community organizations, focusing on female students, students of color, and those from low-income backgrounds. Additionally, structured academic supports, such as tutoring and mentoring in the proposed computer science lab, will be established to help students succeed in these rigorous courses. By aligning curriculum and instruction with student needs and providing clear pathways to college and career, the school will ensure that more students enroll, persist, and complete the ICT pathway, thereby increasing overall program completion rates.
