Pathways Improvement Scope

The Compton Community Health Professions Partnership (CCHPP) seeks to address healthcare disparities and improve educational outcomes by creating a seamless pipeline for health professional education, guiding students from middle and high schools in the Compton Unified School District (USD) to degree programs at Compton College, CSU Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), and Charles Drew University (CDU). Through collaboration with healthcare partners like St. John’s Community Health and Kedren Health, the initiative aims to align education, industry, and community efforts to enhance training and employment opportunities for local graduates. Comprehensive pathway roadmaps will incorporate Advanced Placement courses, dual enrollment, articulated credit, and pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship programs, supported by individualized guidance for students and families. Work-based learning (WBL) opportunities, such as internships and apprenticeships, will be integral to each pathway, with transportation solutions provided to ensure equitable access. Industry partners will co-design and validate pathways, informed by labor market data, to align programs with workforce needs and minimize inefficiencies for on-time postsecondary graduation with minimal debt. Additional support will focus on fostering academic mindsets, social-emotional learning, and social capital through teacher training and strategically designed learning experiences. The initiative is expected to increase the enrollment and completion rates of Black and Latino students in healthcare education programs and expand the number of healthcare professionals from the Compton community employed in local facilities. Using the Linked Learning Alliance Framework, CCHPP will create an equitable, student-centered model that can be replicated in other regions to address workforce shortages and educational inequities.

Goals & Priorities

The implementation of these activities is expected to yield several short-term and long-term outcomes. These include an increase in Black and Latino high school students enrolling in CTE healthcare dual enrollment and early college courses, a rise in the number of Black and Latino students enrolling in healthcare professions programs at Compton College, CSUDH, and CDU, and an improvement in completion rates for these students. In the long term, there will be a growth in the number of Black and Latino healthcare professionals from the greater Compton community employed in partner health facilities such as Kedren and St. John’s. Also, an increase in the number of Compton USD youth participating in and completing registered pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship programs aligned to Compton USD existing and new CTE pathways across all Compton USD high schools (including the new Compton Academy of Technology and Innovation slated to open August 2025).
