Pathways Improvement Scope

While the South Bay cities of Hawthorne and Lawndale are home to a wide array of both established and cutting-edge businesses, 70% of CVUHSD students are socio-economically disadvantaged, 3.1% are homeless, 16.1% are English Learners, and 91.3% identify as either Hispanic/Latino or African American.

Both local and regional labor market statistics from the Centers of Excellence (COE) for Labor Market Research and the 2024-2027 LARC Regional Plan, drive the pathway improvement and development conversations in CVUHSD. The labor market data from both sources points to high growth and high wage opportunities in the sectors with which CVUHSD is focusing this grant: Advanced Manufacturing; Advanced Transportation and Logistics; Energy, Construction & Utilities; Health/Life Sciences & Biotechnology; Education; Hospitality; and Information & Communication Technologies (ICT)/Digital Media.

CVUHSD is planning to use the Round 7 SWP grant to both increase access to dual enrollment opportunities within these sectors and implement strategies that will support success in the accumulation of college credits for our underserved populations.

Goals & Priorities

Based on an analysis of both ECC priorities and the LARC Regional Plan’s “high-growth/high-wage” industry sectors in the LA region, CVUHSD is exploring both opening new (Teacher Prep/Education and Computer/Data Science) and expanding current (Manufacturing/Alternative Energy Vehicles, Music and Recording Arts, Biomedical and Patient Care, and Environmental Technology) pathways.

With feedback and input from our CTE pathways, College and Career Centers, and El Camino College Dual Enrollment team, improve upon the “Dual Enrollment Success Camp” to ensure that dual enrollment students are effectively engaged in developing skills and habits that promote dual enrollment success.

In partnership with EXP and El Camino College, continue to expand on the newly implemented Industry and College Pathway Mentorship program, “Career Success Explorer”.

As we continue to identify new dual enrollment courses to add to our CTE pathways, we need to build on the current student support successes by developing new ways to implement targeted intervention supports so that all students are successful in obtaining college credits, meeting graduation requirements, and obtaining professional certificates. In order to further support student access to and success in the various dual enrollment courses offered, CVUHSD will work with ECC to develop and implement an in-class college-tutor program through which ECC students will provide in-class assistance to the high school students during the dual enrollment classes.
