Pathways Improvement Scope

BUSD and LAVCC have established a collaborative working relationship that has aligned CTE programs with excellent outcomes for our students. We have been working closely to determine the most strategic actions that leverage our partnership and resources, providing students with the support and access they need while navigating changing workforce trends. Our collaborative efforts have continued as we developed our K12 SWP project objectives and work in the following areas:

Increase Completers: Collaboratively explore and plan to create more pathways that directly align with LAVCC and require only two courses, increasing ELL and SpEd students’ capacity to complete at least one pathway.

Equal Access to Support: Develop programming that better informs students and families of systemic student services at LAVCC designed to support successful transitions and completion.

Pathway Alignment, Including Articulation and Dual Enrollment Opportunities: Continue to meet regularly with community college partners to ensure alignment and a coordinated response to shifts in industry needs. Identify general education and articulated courses that provide college credits while attending high school and allow students to waive classes once they reach the community college.

Industry Certification: Identify industry certifications that will be earned in high school pathways and which certifications will be completed through continued enrollment in aligned pathways at community college to promote transition and optimize community college enrollment and completion.

Improved Targeted Student Support Services: Develop high school ELL and SpEd student support systems that mirror or prepare students for services offered at LAVCC.

Professional Development: Provide opportunities for LAVCC instructors and aligned BUSD pathways teachers to collaborate on planning, visiting classes, and attending conferences and training to optimize alignment.

Work-Based Learning (WBL): Coordinate college campus visits and guest speakers to provide ELL, SpEd, and Hispanic students with experiences that build awareness of aligned career education pathways and student support resources/services for special populations, familiarize them with the GCC campus, and establish relationships with LAVCC Pathways faculty and counselors.

Goals & Priorities

BUSD’s project aims to ensure access for all students to CTE Pathway courses that align with Los Angeles Valley Community College (LAVCC) programs, providing opportunities for dual enrollment and addressing identified priority and emerging industry sectors in the 2024-2027 Los Angeles Regional Consortium Plan that are projected for high growth and provide a living wage or better. We are committed to implementing targeted support systems for all students to successfully develop college and workforce readiness skills, including individualized support systems designed to meet the needs of underserved populations and break barriers to access and support. Additionally, we strive to align CTE Pathways with the 2024-2027 LA Regional Plan priority industry sectors that meet or exceed living wage criteria and are in demand.
