Pathways Improvement Scope
BUSD and GCC have an established collaborative working relationship that has resulted in aligned CTE programs that have excellent outcomes for our students. We are working closely to determine the most strategic actions that leverage our partnership and resources and give students the support and access they need while navigating changing workforce trends. We have continued our collaborative work as we developed our K12 SWP project objectives and workplan in the following:
Increase Completers: Collaboratively plan for new two course pathways that make it possible for ELL and SpEd students to complete that are in direct alignment with GCC (Sound Engineering and Graphic Design) pathways.
Equal Access to Support: Develop programming that better informs students and families of systemic student services at GCC designed to support successful transitions and completion
Pathway alignment, Including Articulation and dual Enrollment opportunities: Continue to meet regularly with community college partners to ensure alignment and coordinated response to shifts in industry needs. Identify general education and articulated courses that students provide college credits while attending high school and allow them to waive classes once they reach the community college.
Industry Certification: Identify industry certifications that will be earned in high school pathway and which certifications will be completed through continued enrollment in aligned pathways at community college to promote transition and optimize community college enrollment and completion
Improved Targeted Student Support Services: Develop high school ELL and SpEd student support systems that mirror and or prepare students for services offered on GCC
Professional Development: Provide opportunities for GCC instructors and aligned BUSD pathways teachers to collaboratively plan, visit classes, and attend conferences and trainings together to optimize alignment
WBL: Coordinate college campus visits and guest speakers to provide ELL, SpEd, and Hispanic student’s experiences that: Build awareness of aligned career education pathways and student support resources/services for special populations; build familiarity with GCC campus; and establish relationships with GCC Pathways faculty and counselors.
Goals & Priorities
Burbank USD aims to ensure all students have access to CTE Pathway courses that align with Glendale Community College (GCC) and Los Angeles Valley Community College (LAVCC) programs. These courses provide opportunities for dual enrollment and address identified priority and emerging industry sectors in the 2024-2027 Los Angeles Regional Consortium Plan, which are projected for high growth and provide a living wage or better. We are committed to implementing targeted support systems for all students to successfully develop college and workforce readiness skills. This includes individualized support systems designed to meet the needs of underserved populations, break barriers to their access to college and career readiness programs, and increase the number of ELL and SpEd student pathway completers. Additionally, we strive to align CTE Pathways with the 2024-2027 LA Regional Plan priority industry sectors that meet or exceed living wage criteria and are in demand, such as IT/Digital Media, Medical, Health-Science, and Biotech. To further support our students, we aim to increase the number of ELL and SpEd completers by developing new two-course pathways in Graphic Design and Sound Production.
